More severe weather today

It was a pretty scary night - 14 reports of tornados, and two deaths in Missouri. 190 reports of severe weather across the country. Today the threat moves into the Great Lakes, Tennessee Valley and Ohio Valley. I’ll try to write more throughout the day — but the Machine will be focused on possible mesocyclones!

Hey, do you guys have any weather related movies you like? (i.e Groundhog day, Weather Man, The Wizard of Oz?) That might be a cool thing to think about. I LOVE Groundhog Day — and have watched it at least a half a dozen times!

It has been pretty wild weather in Kansas the last couple of days. Rain, thunder, lightning, but saw the most beautiful rainbow. I think OK, and MO got the tornado’s.
There were many wrecks on I-70 outside of KC yesterday, pretty much all weather related….gota love those semi-s flying by you spraying water all over the windshield and you can’t see……Thanks for keeping us updated on the weather….tell Rick he needs to think about getting a blog tooooooo.

Wow Kathy. I can’t imagine how nervous you must get living in Kansas! I’m glad you’re ok…and hope everyone stays safe. It looks like the midsection might get another strong storm system this weekend. I will pass on your wishes to Rick! He does a great job doesn’t he? I enjoy seeing him on Fox and Friends on the weekend!

A Perfect Storm was a pretty good movie, but I didn’t care for Twister.
I remember the scene with the flying cows in Twister! Pretty crazy! I would love to go out storm chasing at some point. I’ve never seen a real live tornado. I can’t even imagine how amazing that would be (and very scary at the same time)
Man, the tornado warning siren has been going off in my area! At first I thought it was coming from the television, but the sound was everywhere. Finally stuck my head out the door and could tell what it was. One eerie sound at this time of the morning. Reminded me of a WWII movie when the air raids would take place in England.

Not much going on in upstate NY, just a typical fall day accompanied by some thick fog this morning.
As for movies, The Day After Tomorrow comes to mind, a little far fetched but interesting none the less. Groundhog Day was too funny, I’ve watched that several times.

I like Twister and of course The Wizard of Oz. I tend to like movies about tornadoes, since I live in the tornado area. Have you ever watched the documentary of the 1900 hurricane that hit Galveston, TX? It is fascinating, they have it in a museum there and sometimes it is on another channel.
Janice – I live in L.A. (Lower Alabama) and the tornado warning was for an area in the northern part of the county and moving away from me. The EMA siren system sounds county-wide when one is spotted anywhere within the county and that can be a little disturbing. New sirens were installed not all that long ago and I don’t think I have heard them since the first test run. They give off a very surreal whooping sound and seem to be non-directional, because I couldn’t tell where it was coming from. Just kind of consumed my place with that spooky sound! I was about to shave when they went off and I quickly decided to hell with that, grabbed my shirt and went to investigate. lol
I’ve watched those storm chasers in action and that has to be a real rush of adrenalin. I’ve fantasized about doing the same.

You, along with Domenica, are doing a great job reporting the weather. I would like to know, what books can we read to learn about the weather. Did you take night courses here in NYC to become a meteorologist?
Also, from time to time, I think it would be a good idea to tell viewers what NOT to do during storms like do not go surfing, do not jump off of roofs with an umberella to measure wind velocity (Sir Isaac Newton did this in one of his wind velocity/mass experiments!)…some people actually do this!
As for movies, I enjoyed Twister very much. It certainly demonstrated how Tornadoes and Hurricanes can sneak up on a person (check out the diner scene).
And I still say that bad weather is caused by evil spirits!

Has anyone ever noticed that some storm clouds take on an anthropormorhic quality?
There is a cloud formation that I call The Hand of Satan. I have only seen this cloud formation twice in the years I have lived here. It actually has the form of a hand (fingers outstretched, a palm, and a wrist!)! And the “fingers” seem to show articulation (joints).
Another spooky thing about the Hand, is that, it seems to look exactly the same as I saw it both times. It is an evil looking thing, blackish purple in color, and it only appeared during severe rain and lightening storms.
