  • What a Storm!

    Janice Dean | Meteorologist

This system that hit the West had everything! – unbelievable winds, flooding rain, and blizzard conditions.  I read that near Lake Tahoe, winds were gusting up to 165 mph!   San Francisco airport had sustained winds of 50 mph gusting close to 70 mph which of course caused major delays and cancellations yesterday.    The central pressure of the system at it’s peak was on par to what we would see in a Cat 2 hurricane.  Snow totals could range from 2 feet to over 10!

In terms of rain I’ve seen totals of over 8 inches in the California mountains.  The big fear now is the mudslides and debris flows especially in all the areas that are charred from wildfires.  The center of the storm is now into British Columbia, but the rain, winds and snow will continue through the weekend with the trailing cold front into the mountains, and another system (not as powerful) moves in to the region tomorrow.

Folks in Utah’s Wasatch range and the Colorado Rockies  will enjoy an additional 1 to 3 feet with locally higher amounts this weekend from this storm while the southwest will see rain into the very dry areas of Arizona and New Mexico.

Were you caught in the storm last night?    Let me know how you’re doing!    Or if you’re just hanging out, say hi!
