Calmer weather….

Hello!

Happy Tuesday.  There is so much breaking news this morning!  Castro resigning, Princess Diana soap opera, Scary Satellite being shot down from space…Politics…it’s non-stop.  Weather is pretty quiet today (insert sigh of relief)…until the next storm system rolls in.   There’s another chance at severe weather later on this week along the Gulf Coast so we’ll keep an eye on that, but for now this weather lady is appreciative of the break.   We’re starting to see some of the storm reports in more details from this past weekend’s tornado outbreak.   The tornado that tore through Prattville Alabama has been classified as an EF 3 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale with winds of around 150 mph.  It’s path was a quarter of a mile wide.

And since the U.S. is pretty quiet, I thought I would share a little weather in Greece with you where they are dealing with a rare heavy snow event!

Heavy snowfall left about 200 villages cut off across Greece Monday and forced airport authorities to cancel dozens of flights.

Civil defence authorities were on alert, and problems with power and water supply were reported across the country as Greece was gripped by the second day of a winter storm.

Schools and universities were shut throughout the greater Athens area and in many other parts of Greece. About 200 villages, most on the southern island of Crete, were cut off by the heavy snowfall.

Between 10 and 15 centimetres of snow blanketed the centre of Athens, an unusual occurrence in Greece. Near central Athens’ snow-covered Acropolis, only cars using snow chains could use the roads.

Dozens of international and domestic flights to and from Athens’ airport were cancelled. Temperatures had been forecast to plunge to minus 15 degrees Celsius in parts of northern Greece on Monday.

Heavy snow fell also fell over much of Turkey on Monday, causing traffic accidents, disrupting air transport and closing schools.

At least three weather-related deaths were reported.

Snow was 1.5 metres high in the province of Van in eastern Turkey, and thousands of village roads were blocked off in the region.

Schools across the country were closed on Monday to ease traffic and minimize the risk of accidents.

An elderly man froze to death in a town near the northern city of Giresun, and two homeless people were reported dead in the northwestern cities of Bursa and Tekirdag, local media said.

In Istanbul, where snow was 22 centimetres deep, municipality workers moved homeless people into cheap hotels or shelters.

The Mediterranean resort of Antalya had its first snow in 15 years, the Dogan news agency reported.

Snow in Athens & Istanbul (not Constantinople) … Baghdad & Bethlehem … and Junnan Province of China …

Yup … Glow Ball Worming … NOT!!

Oh waitaminute … The Chicken Littles will explain this as it actually being “global warming” because with the hotter temps you’ll get pockets of cold temps … Puh-leaze …

Janice - Are you still afraid of the chocolate bloom … after reading the link I posted yesterday on the science of bloom??

Ok … here’s the fixed link about the meteorologist leaving his tv gig to join the “other side” …

It was 59 here yesterday … after it had gotten down to 30 in the morning … Must be why there was a snow slide on Hwy 2 near Stevens Pass …

I saw something on CBC the other day about the ice jam up in Prince George, BC … That was truly WILD … because it’s really NOT that far from here … Some of the ice looked like it was 2-3+ feet deep along the river …

I like the CBC for their coverage of figure skating and the Olympics (soooo much better than the US networks) …

Hey Tiamat! I worked for the CBC way back when…as a weather gal…love the skating as well- we grew up on that stuff! Still a little afraid of the chocolate bloom I gotta admit! :)

Hey Janice,

The snow in these places might not be ‘global warming’ but it still may mean ‘climate change’. These two terms are not interchangeable. Don’t get me wrong Janice me and you are still on the same page. But what is of note is that this article does not mention that in 2002 and 2006 Athens also got snow. And there are some very well known ski resorts in Turkey and it maybe rare for Istanbul to get snow…it does happen. In 2003-04 it got more snow than usual. We all will just have to keep an eye on this stuff and see if these events become more frequent.

So when we read these articles we need to keep them in context. Remember data can be manipulated to confirm any point. And we humans in the information age have a very short memory of past events.

Take care,

Yes, David — absolutely, positively on the money with your comments. Climate Change and Global warming are not the same. Thank you for pointing that out so eloquently as you always do. We need a t-shirt made that says that! :)

As for us shooting down the satellite, I belive it is all to show the Chinese, Russians, and N Korea that we can do it too. Remember, China shot down a weather satellite last year. That’s my opinion.

We love your opinions here David!
