Good Morning Margie..

I moved to the Open Frog…I mean Blog..I hope you don’t mind..

Didn’t you just love the Smokey Mountains? And I love Cades Cove too.. I only live about an hour away from the Smokies.

Now back to the graveyards..My mothers first baby passed away shorty after birth..and he has one of those small headstones with the lamb on top..The verse on it says “Budded on Earth to Bloom in Heaven”..

And I know what you mean about so many death dates being the same..I have seen alot of that too.. I could probably do a little research and find out some info and if there was an epidemic of some kind. I might just do that…

Have a great Thursday Margie..

Hey gang,

I was waiting for Janice to post an open blog so I could share this without it getting lost in a long thread. Now I just hope it doesn’t wind up in the spam filter since I’m including a link. I just want to let you know that my idea for posting a health topic of the month on my library web site is on hold for a couple weeks. It seems like I hit vacation time for the people that need to approve this. The patient education committee has to approve this project and the things I include. However, I can share something with all of you.

I want to thank everyone for all your great suggestions for health topics. I made a list of all of them for future reference. Until I can get my project off the ground, I want to tell you about a great web site for finding all kinds of medical information. I mentioned this a while back, but I want to mention it again since we’ve had all the health discussions.

The National Library of Medicine has a really great web site called MedlinePlus. It has information on all kinds of health topics, drugs/supplements, senior health, a medical dictionary, interactive tutorials, a medical encyclopedia, clinical trial information, and much more. Everything on this site links to quality, authoritative sources so you don’t have to worry if it’s accurate or not. The link to MedlinePlus is http://medlineplus.gov.

When you look for medical information, start with MedlinePlus. Don’t google! I love Google for a lot of things, but if you google medical conditions, you can wind up at a commercial site that’s trying to sell you something. MedlinePlus will link you to unbiased, non-commercial information, so start there first.

Well, how’s that for a library promotion?! I just want you all to be well-informed if you have to make any kind of medical decision or if you’re just looking for information on a health topic. Have a great day everyone.

Hey Deb,

I saw your post after I sent mine through. I’m glad we moved to the open frog blog! I’m pretty sure that verse you mentioned is on those headstones in Cades Cove. It sounds very familiar. I’ll have to look at my pictures when I get home. I should have written some of the dates down to research. (I’m a librarian–I’m pretty good at that!) I’ll try to remember to do that the next time I see a lot of the same dates.

When I was down there for my trip, I met a really lovely couple named Sammie and Sara at Christus Gardens in Gatlinburg. I still remember their names so they definitely made an impression on me! That was such a fun trip. I’ll have to go back again sometime.

I better get back to work. I hope you have a great day. The sun has actually made an appearance today. Hooray!

Hey Deb,

Hey - Who decide to send the hot weather to the PNW??

It’s supposed to be 75 today and 88 tomorrow …

Weather like this is making me think there is such a thing as glow ball worming … LOL

I think I need to go back & read the other threads … in regards to TnDeb’s dates & deaths post … There was the horrible flu outbreak in the early 20th century that wiped out a lot of people … Also, other diseases that we now get the vaccines for took out a lot of people …

Comment by TnDeb

tiamat..

I think you are correct about the flu outbreak..and I think I remember someone saying something about polio too..

Thanks for reminding me..

Hey gang,

Since we got on the cheerful topic of cemeteries and epidemics, I found a list of major epidemics throughout history on the Wikipedia site. They include all regions around the world, but if you click on North America in the contents, it will jump right to the list. Here’s the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_epidemics#North_America.

Let’s find a more cheerful topic to discuss–How about your favorite vacation spot? The best pictures I’ve taken on a trip were of Niagara Falls but that reminds me of my friend Alicia too much. I think one of my favorite spots was Mt. Rainier/Mount St. Helens. I got some great pictures on that trip. I went with a friend and her family and we drove along the Oregon coast and other places in that area. They have big ants in the Pacific Northwest! Those things were over an inch long and looked like some prehistoric creature! It was lovely finding them in your bed. (We were at a cabin near Mt. Rainier.) The clover was huge, too, as were the rabbits. What do they feed things out there?!

If you feel like sharing your favorite spots, I’d love to hear about them. Have a great afternoon/evening everyone.

Hey Margie..

Thanks for the link..it is very interesting..

Now back to the living..I haven’t been on alot of vacations..but I guess my favorite and most memorable one is to Orlando in May,04..I went with my brother Scott and his family..and I took my oldest grandson with me. We went to Sea World, Disney World, and a few more attractions that I can’t remember right at this moment. We had so much fun..it was a little HOT weather wise..but we didn’t let that stand in our way.We drove there and back in a couple of vehicles..and we went through many mood swings..happy..mad..tierd..anxious..hungry..but we had fun with the ride too..we sang..played car color games..talked on walkie talkies to the other car..We stopped in Georgia near Atlanta on the way down at a rest stop and ate bolonga sandwiches..and let the kids do a little running before we got back on the road..We rented a condo for the week so that was great too.

My grandson had the time of his life..so that made me happy..and I had fun too..
Great Topic Margie!!

The flu pandemic was back around 1918 and killed some 30 million people. Of course with our drugs today and what we know about cleanliness and sterilization, today’s death toll from the same type of thing would be far lower.

Interesting fact back before WWII, most people died from Scarlet fever. I had an uncle, since passed away, that was doing tests with penicillin at the beginning of the war in hopes of preventing some otherwise unpreventable battle deaths. They did not know penicillin could have other uses. Well anyway, my mother contracted the disease and my uncle snuck some penicillin to her, subsequently curing her. Of course, that was part of the beginning of the public having access to antibiotics, all because my uncle illegally gave some to my mother.

Regarding vacation spots. Probably my most interesting/fascinating would have to be scuba diving some underwater shipwrecks down in the Caribbean. Most of those ships were sunk because of Hurricanes. Oh no, don’t anyone tell Al Gore they had Hurricanes back then!

By the way, REVENGE, I love the “glow ball worming.” That pretty much describes the reality of the situation.

Hope everyone has had a great day. The sun is back out now in Denver and it’s onward and upward in the thermometer department from here until mid next week. By the way, has anyone ever been to Colorado and where?

Hey Sunny…

Scuba Diving sounds like fun..Did you find any treasure?

I have never been to Colorado..the closest I have ever come is listening to John Denver songs..(which I love)..but I know it is beautiful there..because I watch the Travel channel too.

Glad you have sun and warmth..I have rain and cool..

Have a good evening Sunny D!!

Hey Sunny,

Thanks for your list. It really does make you think. Your scuba diving adventure sounds great! That would be fascinating. I love underwater stuff. I took a glass bottom boat sightseeing trip out of Key West when I was in Florida many moons ago. That was great. I would love to go to the Great Barrier Reef or some place like that. I guess I would need to learn to scuba dive first, however. I haven’t been to Denver or near that area, but I would love to go there sometime. The Rockies are beautiful and I know I could take hundreds of pictures!

And Deb, your trip to Florida sounds like fun. I think it was in 1989 that I took my trip down there. I got to see a space shuttle launch and that was cool! I went to Epcot Center, Universal Studios, Sea World, Cypress Gardens and then headed down to Miami. I didn’t get to do too much in Miami because we got there just in time for a tropical storm. We made it to Key West and the Everglades before the storm hit, though. I took some great alligator pictures in the everglades. I think I was down there in September and it was really humid at that time of year. When we were down in Miami I went to Little Havana. At that time I worked with someone from Cuba and I got interested in Latin music. We went to a couple music stores and picked up some great music.

Another fun trip I did by myself (in my younger, bolder days) was a two week road trip to Upstate New York and across New England. I drove through the Catskills and Adirondacks and then across to Vermont, NH, Maine, Mass., RI, CT–the whole works! I stayed with friends or relatives for half that time and the other half I was on my own. I went on a whale watching trip out of Gloucester, MA with my friend Julie and got some really great pictures of humpback whales. That was fun!

I want to go back to Minnesota because when I was there last year I had some nasty sinus headaches and didn’t do a whole lot. I want to explore the northern part of the state and take the scenic lake shore drive along Lake Superior. (Just from memory, I think that’s the correct lake!)

Well, I could go on with all my adventures but I don’t want to bore everyone. I hope others will chime in with their favorite vacation spots. Have a great evening everyone.

Fun trips….

Hmmm…Hawaii this past Christmas

Alaskan cruise a couple of years ago…It was a 50-40-40 birthday celebration with my sister and sister-like-friend who used to live with us when my sister and I were kids and hospitals were part of the family scene….

Disneyland…World and all similar parks….my hardware means I GET CUTTIES!!! no waiting in line for Space Mountain…Star Tours…You name it…. HA!!…Its the one and only time that I have found my hardware is an advantage ;)

When I lived in UT my sister came out to visit….When she flew into Salt Lake and we rented a car I asked her how tired she was…She said she slept on the plane and they asked why??

I told her Vegas was only a 6 hour drive :P 8-)

VEGAS surprise trips always are a good thing…

In my family (well me and my sister(s) like doing “mystery” trips….Means one of us sets up something and surprises the other…The whole Disney trip was a mystery birthday trip for my sister’s 30th….She had no idea where we were going…HA!

Has anyone but me noticed how our Goddess seems more beautiful when she “lets her hair down” and shares photos of herself away from the studio? :)

Is it just my biased opinion (major crush) or do my fellow bloggers agree :)

Comment by Wenchie

Luis..

I do think Janice looks more beautiful w/o all the studio make-up…… :)

And that is just my non-biased, non-major crush, female opinion ;)

Comment by Janice Dean

Dawn and Luis…that is so nice of you to say. I have to let you in on a secret: I’m not a big fan of hair and makeup! As much as I love the ladies that help me out everyday at Fox, I wish I didn’t have to wear it! :) One of the nicest things about being on vacation is a break from the tv look!

Comment by Margie Gacki

Hey Dawn and Luis,

I agree with you 100% about Janice. (That also is my non-biased, non-major crush, female opinion!) Some people just have that natural beauty that doesn’t need to be all made up. But the most important thing is that Janice has that inner beauty, which in the end is a lot more important than the outward appearance. That’s hard to remember sometimes when we look at people, but it’s the way it should be. That’s just my opinion!
