…and its raining here again….=Day off !!….

Another busy weekend ahead though…so the day off gives me a chance to get some rest and clear my head .. :D

Hey Dawn,

You got the rain that we got earlier. Sorry about that! I don’t think the sun is out but at least it’s not raining. I just hope the fog lifted. I looked out a window earlier and it was pretty foggy. I have to travel over a mountain this evening so I hope the fog goes away. These mountains can be nasty in the fog. I’m glad you got some rest today. That’s important, especially since you have a busy weekend ahead. My weekend should be nice and quiet, which is nice. I hope you have a good one!

No complaints about the rain to be honest Margie…We have a slightly below normal so a decent day of rain is ok…Means we dont have to irrigate the fields…I also did a bit of planting in my own beds yesterday and this is a nice way to get them watered in…

AH…fog…..yes quite a hazard huh??…I admit though it really is a pretty sight when its settled over the fields…

But other than that…a hazard…

Yes we are hoping for another good weekend…Cant believe we are half way thru May already though….

Oy….

Hey gang, things sure quieted down this evening. I hope everyone is doing something fun. It looks like we’ll finally get a sunset this evening. Actually, the sun sets every evening but with all the clouds and rain, I just haven’t seen one for a while! I may be talking to myself this evening, but I just wanted to wish everyone a great, safe weekend. I hope everyone gets to do something fun. Since I won’t be able to do much, if anything, out in my garden, I’ll have more time to build a CD case for a friend of mine. She saw the one I made for myself and liked it, so I’m making her one for her birthday. That will be fun.

Take care,
Margie

Good evening Margie..

The sun finally came out here this evening..it is starting to set now..it was great while it lasted..hopefully it will be out 100% tomorrow!!

And you can build stuff too??That doesn’t surprise me..you are multi-talented..I left a comment for you on the Question Of the Day thread..didn’t know if you saw it yet..

I am going to work outside tomorrow..I have been doing some staining on my house and porches..and it is a big job..I have had help with some of it..but I have tackled most of it on my own…and I would like to finish it up before it gets too hot..because I can’t function in 85 to 100 degree weather..

You have a great weekend..I’ll check in from time to time tomorrow..when I take my breaks..

Hi Deb,

I’m glad there’s someone out there in blog land. I’m having a nice quiet evening and I like that. I did see your comment on the other thread. It does sound I have a lot in common with your brother. I just love music and recording and that kind of thing, but I can’t carry a tune in a bucket. I leave that up to the professionals! I’ve always been interested in the technical end of things. I might get that from my dad. He was a customer service engineer for IBM before he retired. I guess I inherited the technical stuff from him. My mom is very artistic so I get that from her.

I love to make things. I guess I got that from growing up with two brothers. My dad did some beautiful woodwork in his younger years and my brother Mike was very talented like that, too. I miss Mike a lot for a number of reasons, but especially since I bought my house. When I run into a situation where I need help with something, I wish he was around to help. When I bought my house, my parents and my brother Tom bought me a compound miter saw my first Christmas. (I love power tools!) My greatest creation so far was a nativity set I built a few years ago. The figures are about 2 feet high and they’re made out of plywood. The stable is made with 2×4’s. I was so proud of that project, especially the fact that I used a miter saw, jig saw, and circular saw without cutting off any body parts! I only suffered a couple splinters. I just love making things. Some day I might actually take a carpentry class to learn how to do more things around my house.

I hope you have success with your staining. That kind of thing is a big job. That’s not the kind of thing you want to do when it gets to be 85-100 degrees, so I hope you can get the whole thing done. I don’t think I’ll have to worry about 85 degree temperatures for a while. It’s only 50 now so we have a long way to go! I wish you well with your endeavor.

Take care,
Margie

That temp is soo important tndeb! I have tried it at 92, it doesn’t set well!

Hey Margie..

My brother Scott can sing and play many instruments…but he also is very tech savvy..it just comes to him naturally..He is self taught on playing his instruments..he learned to play the guitar by ear when he was 9 years old..and shortly after the drums..he has been in alot of bands..and even been a one man band..he did go to college to learn how to read music and do computer stuff..but he could have done just as well without it…(he even says so himself)..

And my brother Chris that passed away was very talented also..he did drywall for a living..but he also built furniture ..such as cabinets..shelfs..etc..for extra money..He could see something like an entertainment center in the store… and come home and build one just like it..and he helped me around the house too..just like yours did..and that meant so much to me …

Well I’ll shut up for now..and rest up for my staining adventure tomorrow..it has been nice chatting with you..have a great evening.

Wenchie - Gimme back my rain!! ;-) It was an annoying 79 today (they had predicted 8 8) and it’s supposed to be an annoying 78 tomorrow … It was just in the low 50s & raining on Mon/Tues … This is sooo insane!!

Margie - Are you sure your name isn’t McGyver?? ;-)

tndeb - Try having to work when it’s 115 … Those are the days that you wish you worked at the ice factory …

And for today’s video from the “Wholey Moley” file …

Hello, Janice and everyone,

When I was in high school (1954-195 8) and college (1958-1964), I knew many young women who wanted to become stewardesses. They wanted to see the U.S. and, if possible, other parts of the world. And, they dreamed of marrying a pilot or a successful passenger.

After college, I lived in the Old Town area of Chicago, just a few blocks from Sandburg Village, a large apartment complex, and the Rush Street area, which was home to dozens of singles bars (Butch McGuire’s, Shenanigan’s, Mother’s, The Lodge, The Store, Barnaby’s, Irving’s ? (called “Irving’s Question Mark”), Jay’s, Rush Up, and Rush Over, to name a few.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of stewardesses lived at Carl Sandburg Village and in many other apartment buildings on the Near North Side, all an easy walk to the bars in the Rush Street area. The “stews,” as we called them and they called themselves, were often the envy of other young women because they saw so much of the country and, sometimes, other parts of the world.

Earlier this week, I came across a photo essay about stewardess in the 1960’s and a few from earlier years on the Wired.com web site:

http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/multimedia/2008/05/gallery_flight

Today, I created an online slide show using Road Runner’s Photo Show software. I’m a newbie with this software and couldn’t figure out how to add captions. That shouldn’t be too much of a problem because you can follow the above link to see the photos and read about each one.

Here is the link to my online Road Runner Photo Show about stewardesses:

http://www.photoshow.com/watch/GJ4PS9bS

As you look through these images of stews from the 1960’s and earlier, remember that there weren’t too many career choices from young women in the early 1960’s and before. That all began to change in the early 1970’s when the women’s movement really took off and organizations such as Women Employed pressured corporate America to offer more job opportunities and promotions for their female employees.

I hope you enjoy these photos and other images!

Good morning everyone,

Hey tiamat–just call me Margie McGyver! You gave me a good laugh this morning! I guess it was growing up with 2 brothers and my dad where I picked up all my skills, which have been very helpful over the years. You know, I used to be able to change the oil on my car until I bought my most recent car. I think the automakers are in cahoots with the mechanics because they make the cars so complicated these days that it’s hard for us “regular” folks to do things on our own. I can still change a tire, and that has come in handy a couple times.

George–thanks for sharing your story with us. I’ll check out those links a little later when I have more time. It sounds very interesting.

Don–I don’t know if we have anyone on this blog from Ohio, but I guess we can stop dreaming now. It’s a few hours drive for me to get to Ohio, so it wasn’t me. If only one person won the money then they are in pretty good shape, I’d say!

Deb–You’ll have to let us know how your staining adventure goes for you today. I hope you can beat the heat. It’s only 64 here in Cumberland right now so that’s nice. I just don’t think I’ll be able to do much out in the mud, but maybe I can pull some weeds. The weeds certainly did well in the rain!

Dawn–I hope you have a great weekend that isn’t too crazy.

Have a great weekend everyone!
Margie

Margie that is how everything is. The tractors my son works on have more than one computer system in them. There is a shortage of mechanics that can do both the tech and mechanic stuff. That is why TD is so successful in FFA, they teach them both. The National Ag Mechanics competition will use a laptop for each team. I got on a website to see what he needed to know and most of it I didn’t understand! His FFA coach says that all the dealers are looking for sharp well educated mechanics. There is a huge divide of what they have and what they need.

Well today my 8th grader has his graduation class party. I am doing the pictures, I can hardly wait! I have much to do before it though.

I will try and check in later!

Hey Margie McGyver..I cracked up when I read that..but it is a huge compliment..McGyver is a cool survivor..I am fixin to start my staining..but I am in granny-gear today so it will be a slow process.. I am going to get some help today..so that’s a plus..

Don..too bad for us about the Lottery..that shot all our plans to heck..but I am very happy for the winners.. Maybe one of these days…

Hey Kathy, have fun at your son’s graduation party–and congratulations! I’m sure you’re very proud. I hope your other son does well with the mechanics stuff, too! It just seems like they make things more and more complicated these days.

Hey Deb, I feel like I’m in granny-gear today, but I don’t have any excuse! It’s just a lazy day. I’m still in my pajamas but I do want to go outside in my garden so I guess I better get dressed. Mud and pajamas don’t go well together! I’ll have to use my McGyver skills to get my waterfall reconstructed. I’m almost done so it shouldn’t take too long once the ground dries out a little.

I enjoy being self-sufficient with all my little skills, but one thing I won’t touch is electrical stuff. Electrocution is something I don’t want to experience. I’ll try anything that doesn’t include the possibility of death!

Anyway, I better get going before it gets to be lunch time. Have fun everyone.

Hey Margie..

Break-time for me..I had a slow start but I am burning it up now!!

Great weather here… sunny..gentle breeze…72 degrees…nice..

I don’t do electrical either…or heights..I only go 3 or 4 steps on a ladder..and that’s it..

And I know what you mean by self-reliant..I have had many situations that I had to use my skills.. which are more like Laverne and Shirley..but some how it turned out okay..

Well back to work..hope you are having a nice Saturday..
Deb

Don..I will check out your link later on this evening..I love sunsets..
thanks

Deb and Margie…Hi there :) Yep it was crazy and yep I did work hard…the weather was great…and it was all ok…Doing the down shifting into a more quiet spot and just put me feet up….

Everyone have a great evening…Im going to veg out to some TV for a bit then go to bed…and get up and do the same thing all over again….

Warm and peaceful thoughts to all….Tell all those that you love that you do…

Hey Deb,

I’ve had plenty of Laverne and Shirley moments, too! You know, since I read your post earlier this afternoon I’ve been singing that silly song. I used to watch that show all the time! I hope you got lots of work done today. It’s been very windy here but the sun was out a good part of the down. Some clouds have moved in now. I did manage to weed my garden and clean up my workshop in my basement. We’re supposed to get rain tomorrow so I think it will be a good day to work on the CD case I’m making for my friend.

I have to tell you something funny. I don’t know if you’re like me, but way too many times after I clean up my house, I can never find anything! When Sara Renner came to sing at my church in April she stayed here at my house. Of course, since I was hosting a special guest, I did an extra special job of cleaning my house. Well, now I can’t find my garden tools! Since my kitchen door opens right up to my backyard, I usually keep my trowel and clippers in the kitchen. Well, I cleaned up my kitchen and now I can’t find my tools! I looked all over the place but I don’t have a clue what happened to them. I needed both things today so I was rather frustrated. They’re hiding together somewhere in this house. I think I’ll go to the hardware store tomorrow and buy some replacements so I can do my work. Of course, just as soon as I buy new ones I’ll find the others! Oh well, there are worse things in life.

Hey Dawn, I hope you get some good rest. I’m glad business has been good for you. I need to get out and buy some flowers but this weather has been so wet. Since the forecast for the coming week has improved, maybe I’ll be able to get some things in.

Have a great evening everyone.

Hey Margie,

Sorry about the Laverne and Shirley theme song..but it is a cute song..

Today was very productive..I got alot of staining done..but I still have alot left to do..I actually love doing things around the house..one of my who am I.. top 10 …was domestic..and I am very domestic..

I usually don’t mis-place things..but every now in then something takes missing..but it usually shows up somewhere..I hope you find you garden tools..maybe foul-play isn’t involved..LOL..

I think we have a chance of rain over night..but tomorrow is supposed to be sunny again..at least I hope so..

I guess you keep your McGyver tools in your workshop..huh..? I have tools too..I even have a tool box.. can’t do without it..

I wonder if Janice made it back home safely..we haven’t heard anything from her today..I sure hope she is feeling better..

Well I am going to shower again and put on my pj’s and take it easy..
Have a good evening..

Deb,

I’m glad your day was productive. It gives you a sense of accomplishment when you finish a project and it turns out well.

I’ve been thinking about Janice today, too. I hope everything went well with their travel. Hopefully we’ll hear something Sunday.

For the sake of reminiscing, I’ll close with: “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Schlemeel, schlemazel, hasenfeffer incorporated…” I couldn’t resist! (I did a Google search to make sure I spelled all those crazy words correctly!)

Have fun!

Deb - Squiggy is a “scout” for the Seattle Mariners … Sadly, the GM (Bavasi) doesn’t listen to Squiggy when it comes to picking up new talent …

George - The Museum of Flight in Seattle has been running an exhibit (I think it closes at the end of the month) on the uniforms of stewardesses over the years … My Dad’s got a bunch of the publicity stills from back in the late 60s-early 70s for airlines like PSA & others when they had the girls in the mini-skirts standing spread eagle inside the engines … ;-)

Margie / Wenchie - I knew you ladies would get a kick out of the McGyver comments …

Margie - I used to be able to do a LOT of things on cars … But, a few injuries later and the advent of all those blasted on-board computers in the cars, I can’t even change a tire anymore …

It was 91 yesterday on FEMA Region X Hill … It’s NOT supposed to be that hot here … ever … If we get close to it, that should be in August, esp since summer doesn’t start til July 5th … A month ago, we had over 6 inches of snow … This is nuts … Mother Nature needs to seriously stop smokin’ the Crack that she’s getting from Albertina Gorebinski (cause even she’s starting to believe there’s such a thing as Glow Ball Worming) …
