Tropical Depression II
Hi everyone
I’m a little busy today - with some graphics training to get through, but wanted to say hello. Quick weather update: We’ve got a cold front draped from the Northeast back into the Plains, and that will be the focus of showers and thunderstorms as we head into the long holiday weekend. An isolated severe thunderstorm could also pop up with the main threat being hail, damaging winds and localized flooding. Much of the west remains dry with the exception of the pacific northwest where a disturbance is moving in and bringing with it some unsettled weather. Meantime, somewhat cooler and more humid air will help firefighters battle wildfires in California. The desert southwest will remain dangerously hot into the weekend.
And something very cool has developed out in the far Eastern Atlantic: A new tropical depression just off the coast of Africa. This is forecast to become our 2nd tropical storm of the season. The storm is not forecast to become a hurricane and will not be a threat to land, but will be monitored over the next several days for development. It’s very rare to see a tropical storm form this far out in the Atlantic so early in the season. If you’d like to check it out, you can head here: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
Have a great day everyone - and safe travels if you are already heading out of town for the long 4th of July Holiday!

Hey Janice,
I hope your training goes well. With the way technology keeps changing, I guess there are all kinds of things for you to learn all the time. I finally got around to submitting a couple pictures this morning. Since rainbows have been popular on the blog lately, I thought I’d send one that I took at Niagara Falls. I was in Canada and the rainbow started at the Canadian Falls in the foreground and arched around to the American Falls in the background. The Rainbow Bridge is aptly named because the rainbow curved around and almost followed the arch of the bridge. I also submitted a sunrise picture that I took out one of the windows in my house. I have some great fireworks pictures that I took a couple years ago so I’ll find a couple good ones to send in over the weekend.
I hope everyone has a great day.
Margie
Thanks Janice! I was hoping the CA fires would get some rain. Don’t work too hard today!
I am also wondering how is the weather like in Hawaii. Are the folks there having any storms and hurricanes heading their way?
Hey Brad, There’s a site called WeatherBug where you can search the weather for different cities. I stuck in Honolulu and was surprised that they’re 10 degrees cooler than Cumberland. That, however, is because they’re 6 hours behind us so it’s only 9:00 a.m. there. They’re supposed to get up to 88 today. Except for today, they have a chance of rain in the forecast every day for the next week. There aren’t any hurricanes around there. The humidity looks pretty nasty. Cumberland is only at 39% but Honolulu has 72%. That could feel pretty nasty when the temperature gets to 88. I don’t think Hawaii gets too many direct hits from Hurricanes if I remember correctly. There’s no place to hide out there if a storm takes direct aim at the islands. There is a tropical storm and depression off the coast of Mexico but it doesn’t look like they’ll impact Hawaii.
Anything else you want to know?! (That’s the librarian in me that always has to be looking something up!) Have a great day!
Margie
Hey Margie! Thanks for helping out in the weather dept! You do good research!
Hey Margie-
Thanks for the wealth of knowledge you provide for me on a daily basis. I know 10 years ago there was a terrible hurricane that did major destruction throughout the Hawaiian Islands. I cant remember the name, but i am sure you are going to find out for me
By any chance know how to make websites using the HTML codes? I am sure you use the library computers often, the ones they have at my local area library are really bad, they dont work properly, and are slower than a turtle.
I guess you could have also been a teacher in another life. You sound like you would change the world and influence some of the younger generation, totally lost with those bad influences nowadays, and give them some inspiration to achieve their dreams and goals.
Take Care
I almost forgot to mention, a newcomer to Hawaii will probably not like the sticky humid weather.
I have visited there many times, so i am kind of used to it.
I think the difference between Hawaii and places like CA, and NV, is the dry desert air.
Sometimes i wonder how the residents there even get thru the day with those sweltering tempuratures.
Aw Brad, you say the nicest things! Thank you for making me feel special. I have to tell you, although I’m a medical librarian now, my college degree was in school librarianship. I was an elementary school librarian for a year in Dover, DE. That was not a very good experience because of one of the principals I worked for, but God had something else in mind for me and now I’m where I’m supposed to be. To tell you the truth, as much as I love kids, I don’t think I’d want to be a teacher in this day and age. Even back in 1984-85 I had to deal with some tough street kids. I’ll never forget an encounter I had with a little first grader. I asked him to do something and he stuck his fist up at me and said, “Make me!” I wonder if he’s in jail at this point in his life! I still try to influence young people, but just not in a school setting.
I looked up the hurricane you mentioned. It was a category 4 storm that hit in 1992. Here’s a little blurb from a Hawaii TV station from last August:
“The last time a category 4 hurricane hit Hawaii was 15 years ago when Hurricane Iniki swept over the islands.
“The eye of the hurricane passed over Kauai on September 11, 1992. It caused over $1 billion in damage and six deaths. The hurricane also destroyed 1,400 homes and severely damaged over 5,000.
“Oahu also experienced moderate damage from the storm.
“Hurricane Iniki was the first hurricane to hit the state since Hurricane Iwa in 1982.
“It remains the strongest hurricane in history to hit the Hawaiian Islands.”
Thankfully they don’t get too many like that! Oh, I almost forgot, I really don’t have any experience with making web sites. That’s one thing that I’d like to do, but I have not had the opportunity. Maybe some day…
Margie
Iniki did some damage that year. We had to cut a port visit short and get our ship out to the open sea for safety.
I’m glad Kathy and Don chimed in here since it was just Brad and me on this thread! Of course there’s nothing wrong with that but it’s nice to hear from the rest of the gang, too.
Margie
I’m here now…just a few days late!
I enjoy reading your threads Margie and Brad! I was busy most of the day getting a few things wrapped up and wasn’t near the computer!
Have a great 4th all!
Hey Don, I hope you have a great 4th too. It sounds like it’s going to be a rainy one unfortunately, but I won’t complain. At least there aren’t any fires or floods. Hopefully they’ll be able to set off the fireworks here in town. Have fun!
Margie
Hi all,
I’m chiming in now.
Yeah it was my turn.
Have a wonderful 4th of July everyone. Spend it with friends and family, don’t worry about the diets either.
The weather forecast here calls for nice weather till at least Saturday! Could we be getting summer finally?
I just found out they will be serving us BBQ this afternoon! YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
What does everyone here think about horrible video of that 16 year old boy whotaped himself catapulting a baby from a pillow like it was a doll? All so he can post it on youtube? The stupid things people will do to publicize themselves on that site. Its just like that teen beating, if it wasnt for youtube, the beating probably wouldnt have taken place.
Don-
You lived in Hawaii during that Iniki storm? Wow, it must have been terrible for you. I am glad you got out of there safely.
I always like to get a feel of what is going on in the state of Hawaii, so i find myself at times browsing the internet for news on what is happening in the Hawaiian Islands.
Usually the local newspaper websites are a good place to start.

Did you know they are going to build a rail transit system? But they seem to have a ton of protests from anti rail groups. I know that in many big cities in the US, rail is a huge life saver for people who have to commute to and from work everyday.
I am certainly no expert on this subject, but i wonder if a rail system would be right for the people living in Hawaii? In my opinion, it will probably ruin and pollute the natural beauty, two of the things that makes that place so appealing for visitors and the rest of the world.
I know recently the Governor started this interisland ferry system called the Hawaii Superferry, and its supposed to be able to take tourists and vistors alike between islands without all the hassle of flying an airplane.
I noticed another of my comments didnt appear once again, i wonder if it went into the spam file.
It was in the spam, but I found it!
I read on the internet that the residents of Hawaii are planning to build a rail transit system, but there are a ton of protests, mostly because it will create more pollution and ruin the natural beauty of the islands.
Plus the Governor down there recently started a commuter ferry system called the Hawaii Superferry, and it supposedly is a faster way to travel between islands. You can even bring your car, according to what i read.
JD - So this some unsettled weather is just industry speak for “We honestly have no clue as to what weather might roll into your area” … Right?? LOL
The past week’s weather has been uber bizarre here … I think the only things we haven’t seen are hurricanes / tornados / snow … We’ve had days in the 90s, rain, hail, thunder, lightning, humidity, clouds, fog, wind, mudslides … Gosh, no one has had flooding here
JD - Can we re-route the hot & humid weather to say Iran or Siberia ?? This is NOT the weather that was promised in the tourism board’s brochure … LOL
You got us figured out Tiamat! That’s why we always say: A CHANCE of ….whatever…I know its been hot there lately…should be better this weekend…back to normal (clouds, chance of rain…haha)
Ah…we all love training.
Well, no fish in my freezer yet, but maybe this weekend. We are heading down to the Kenai Peninsula for the weekend. We had some really nice days over the past few days. We hit 70 for the first time this year. But not it should be cloudy and rainy for the weekend.
Hopefully I will have a pic to share from a successful weekend.
Take care and happy 4th!!!
Have a wonderful 4th David! Say hello to your wife! Hope she’s doing ok!
Hey Brad, sometimes when you post things with links it does wind up in the spam filter until Janice checks it out. I don’t know why that happens because it doesn’t do it all the time. Some of mine go through and some of mine wind up in the spam filter–go figure! Janice posted an open thread for us for the Fourth so let’s switch over to that when you check in!
Hey Peter, I’m glad you checked in, too! There were a couple more after you so now I don’t feel like it was just Brad and me on this thread!
Margie
Happy 4th to Everyone..
Have fun and stay safe..!!
You too Deb!
I hope the weather turns out ok for you…
Thanks Margie-
I have noticed this a lot when i am posting at other FNC blogs, there were even times when my comments even failed to appear at all, and i had to take the trouble of reposting them again. But hey, i have no complaints, this is a wonderful site, and FNC is a awesome network
You could start up a karate program to help benefit inner city kids, just like how Chuck Norris does for his Kick Drugs out of America program.
Nonetheless, you are an Angel sent from Heaven to do good in the world, and it looks like you have achieved Heavenly status. God Bless you.
It looked like my comment appeared, even though i took the trouble to try and write it up again.
thanks Janice for all your expertise
I hope you dont work to hard this weekend!
Take Care.
Hey David-
I love a good home cooking meal, i wonder if you will be serving trout or baked salmon? Its very nutritious, with all those Omega 3 fatty acids that help with joint and heart function.
