  • The return of El NINO!

    Good morning everyone!

Well, it’s official.  El Nino is back, and there’s good news and bad news when it comes to this weather phenomenon.   El Nino is basically the warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean waters that can affect weather patterns across the world.   This happens every two to five years, and can last up to 12 months.    What does that mean for us here in the U.S.?   Well, in the summertime, El Nino can bring damaging winter storms in California, increased storms over the southern U.S.    When the water is warming in this region, that can lead to a decrease in ocean “productivity” meaning weather patterns that can decrease the amount of nutrients in the ocean that get “churned up” and help the marine food chain…the fishing industry can be greately affected during an El Nino Year.

The good news is El Nino can help suppress the intensity and number of hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin as well as bringing much needed rain to desert southwest, less wintry weather over the north and a reduced risk of Florida Wildfires.

If you want to read more about El Nino, you can click on here.

And of course, something many of us cannot forget when we hear the phrase “EL NINO” is the hilarious Chris Farley sketch a few years back on Saturday Night Live which I’ve found courtesy of UTUBE! :)

Now I'm confused Janice....... All of the tree hugging environmental wackos, Liberals, Democrats and anyone else with a political agenda to advance have told me that our wild weather is because of Global, oops I mean, Climate Change. Now you're saying El Nino? ;-)

Hey y'all! :) Loved that Chris Farley. I agree, JB. The skit with Patrick Swayze is one of the best ever...a real classic! He and John Candy were 2 of my all-time favorites. Hey Deb! When I was 20 I, too, had the world on a string. Oh if I could just go back and know what I know now! Isn't that the way it always goes? Hmmm....Nancy Pelosi as an appetite suppressant. Works for me! Later! Gwen

Hey Janice, I remember when the "El Nino" thing was going on before...people blamed everything on that...I think even when their spouse was unfaithful! ha So we'll see what happens this go around. It's's going back and forth..could it be el nino??? temps are creeping back up too. and the nice breeze from yesterday is gone..which makes it feel much hotter. The Steve McNair situation is so sad...I too feel sorry for his wife and children...I heard on our local news that she (wife) had no idea that he was cheating. What a horrible way to find out. I couldn't imagine being in her position. From reports I have heard of the young woman (Sahel/aka Jenny) she was very unstable, and telling her co-workers she was thinking about ending her life. Very sad too. She was only 20. When I was 20. I had nothing to be sad about. Life was just beginning. (as an adult). JD..have a great time in the OV. I am sure lil' man will love it. Take care, Deb

Hi, Janice, Thanks for explaining about "El Nino." Yours is the first description of it that makes sense to me. And thanks for the Chris Farley video. I knew Chris here in Los Angeles in the mid-1990's. We sometimes had lunch together on Sunday afternoons in a restaurant on Robertson not far from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Chris knew I had lived in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood, home to Second City, from 1964 until 1986, when I moved to California. He was very curious about Second City and Old Town "in the old days." I felt sorry for Chris because he couldn't stay clean and sober. He tried and tried. I was devastated when I learned he had died of an overdose a week before Christmas in 1997 in his condo in the Hancock Building in Chicago. I miss those Sunday lunches with Chris....

(Janice...looks like a post of my got caught into the vortex....Im thinking its because I had two links related to late blight effecting tomatoes in the NE)

A bit OT from the weather...but also weather related because it is a disease made worse by wet rainy conditions....... For those in the NE region who have gardens ...something you need to know about when it comes to your tomatoes... Our farm has just tested "+" for late blight....It's going to be an uphill battle to save our tomato crop....

Hey JB, I agree with you about Nancy Pelosi! There are a lot of politicians that cause me to lose my appetite! I'm glad I didn't see her because I'm getting ready to go down to the cafeteria for my lunch and I'm pretty hungry. I'll bring it back to the library and watch some news while I'm eating. Depending on the news being covered, sometimes I'll switch to the History Channel instead. Like I said before, some politicians make me lose my appetite and I hate watching them while I eat! Hey Janice, I hope you got the pictures I sent. I could have sent a lot more but I don't want to bog you down with a lot of pictures. I'm sure I'll have plenty more of my Eastern Shore trip on Sunday and Monday, so I'll have to pick the best ones from that bunch, too. It's hard to choose sometimes! It will be interesting to see what El Nino brings this year. The weather has been so crazy it's hard to tell what will happen. I can't remember having so many mornings in a row where the temperature has been in the mid 50's in July! I've been wearing a jacket in the mornings. At least I'm saving money at home since I haven't had to run the air conditioner in my living room much. My house stays pretty cool when the temperatures don't get too warm and with all the mornings in the 50's, it's only around 73 or 74 in my living room when I get home. I like that! Well, I'm running out of space so I'll say goodbye. It's time for lunch! Have a great afternoon everyone. Margie

JD, I enjoyed the Chris Farley clip. I will always rememeber the Chippendale's sketch he did with Patrick Swayze years ago on SNL. He was an extremely talented performer who sadly passed away much too soon. John Belushi, John Candy, Phil Hartman and Chris Farley were all taken in their comedic primes. I hope El Nino grings a little rain to the hot dry conditions here in Texas. I hope all have a great weekend. I am surprised that no diet company has tried showing video clips of Speaker Pelosi talking(she is on FNC now) as an appetite suppressant. After watching her talk, I have lost my appetite and I am sure others do too. JB
