  • Flash flooding in Ok City...and Alex?

Hi everyone.  Hope you had a great weekend.  It feels like just 5 minutes ago I was talking about how I was looking forward so some R & R on Friday!

Unfortunately, weather is becoming a lead story, and not in a good way lately.  The Arkansas flooding is just devastating, and now we’ve got close to 10 inches of rain flooding the Oklahoma city metro area.  There’s reports of road closures, high water rescues and water getting into homes at this hour.  The National Weather Service is calling this a particularly dangerous flooding situation for the area as rain continues to pound the region.  Here’s a look at some of the storm totals right now:

Flash flood warnings are in effect for the next several hours, and we’re expecting heavy rain through the plains, up into the Midwest and Ohio River Valley as a frontal boundary acts as a path for low pressure systems to travel on.  Extremely warm, humid air ahead of the front is helping to fuel some of these storms.

And in the tropics, a very rare tropical wave for this time of year so far out in the Atlantic is getting its act together right now.  It looks like we could have our first tropical depression of the 2010 season, and perhaps our first named storm – Alex in the next 12 to 24 hours.  The only other time we’ve had a storm this early so far out in the ocean was Tropical Storm Ana back in 1979.  Climatology tells us that any storm that forms this far out so early in the season shouldn’t survive, but the sea surface temperatures are off the charts right now, and over the next day or so upper level winds will be pretty light, so chances are good we’ll see Alex show up, and the Lesser Antilles will need to keep an eye on this for at the very least heavy rain and strong winds by weeks end.

Looks like a busy week in the weather department.  Just praying everyone keeps safe across the flood prone regions this week.

In other blog news, it does appear that we are getting spammed bigtime.  Not sure what we can do about this, since comments are not really regulated (except by me when I clean out the spam box!)  So, I’ll try to be on top of it a little more.

Have a great day – be safe everyone.

    JD

Deb, so sorry to hear about your friend and her family. Sending many hugs and prayers at this difficult time. Crazy weather in Oklahoma, and glad I am out of there! They've been getting hit with some pretty nasty storms and now all this flooding too. they need a break! I got out of Oklahoma in time to miss the tornadoes and the flooding and came to California to deal with earthquakes! Tonight's quake was my first one and it shook us pretty good here in Oceanside!

Hi guys. I posted part 1 of my visit to Fox on my blog: http://totherepublic.wordpress.com/ I told Ms JD, but I think I forgot to tell you. Yep, since she was the first person I ran into that day the blog pretty much starts with her. She is also in part 2, but that's for the end of the week. chas

Thanks Margie, AJ and Gwen. My friend Phyllis was a single mother of 4 boys. I have known the boys all their lives, they went to school w/my children and came to my home many times when they were younger. My daughter even dated Ira, (the one that passed away today), before she married. After Josh's suicide, their lives fell apart, especially Ira and Phyllis. She became distant & bitter and he turned to drugs. She lived for her children, and they adored her. She just became a grandmother in Sept.

Kirsten (and anyone else who's interested), here's a link to a news story about the funnel cloud with pictures and a video: http://www.9news.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=140933. (If the blog divides the URL onto two lines when I send this, make sure you copy the whole thing.) Margie

I just wanted to retract my comments in my post earlier this afternoon about the weather not being as hot as over the weekend. That was based on the fact that it was cloudy at lunch and looked like rain. Well, the sun came out during the afternoon & heated things up to 88 degrees with a heat index of 92. It was not very pleasant walking out of an air conditioned building and getting hit by a blast of heat and humidity--yucky! At least we don't have flash flooding so I won't complain! Margie

Hey Deb, what a sad story. I will keep that family and you in my prayers. It sounds like there were some serious mental health issues in that family and so many times things end tragically. It's all so very sad. Margie

Just had a big Thunder-Boomer w/heavy rain. Temp dropped about 15 degrees. No rain now, but still cloudy. Sad news, an old friend of mine passed away yesterday after a battle w/cancer. We drifted apart a few years ago, after 1 of her sons committed suicide and she isolated herself w/ depression. Today, her youngest son was found dead from an OD. He said he couldn't go on without her. This is so tragic. I'm numb.

Both of those stories are not good news for my family! We pray everyone stays safe. I was wondering if you could post the picture of that cold funnel cloud in Leadville, CO that you broadcasted this morning? That was fascinating! :-) Thanks!

Afternoon JD and all! Still HOT and dry here. Oh yeah..it's Summer. We've had near record temps around here the past couple of days, but it hasn't quite gotten up to those. We've been camping out at the lake for a few days, but it's so hot that it's hard to enjoy camping. Also, I've got a case of Summer sore throat, which makes me even more miserable. Okay...that's enough "poor me" talk. I am blessed beyond measure. Gotta go. Much work to do. Catch y'all later. Gwen :)

Hey Janice, I love seeing you on TV but it seems like I only see you a lot when the weather is bad. You're doing a great job of keeping folks updated. I do hope the folks in Oklahoma City use common sense & stay off the streets during this mess. So many times you hear about people getting killed when they try to drive on flooded roads. It's warm & humid in Cumberland. Not as hot as the weekend, it's still pretty uncomfortable. I hope everyone has a great (and safe) week! Margie
