  • Wicked weather in our backyard!

Hi everyone!  We had quite the afternoon of storms here across New York City, which I’m sure you’ve seen on the news.    I don’t think anyone expected the intensity of storms that blew through our area and did major damage to many neighborhoods.   I was on the train home, when all of a sudden the train stopped for close to an hour, and then proceeded to head back to NYC.    When I arrived back at Penn Station they had basically shut down all service anywhere.  I walked back to Fox (since the subways were completely full), went to my office and tried to call a car service.  The operator told me it was at least a two hour wait, and they couldn’t guarantee a ride home.  I then called my husband in tears (by this time it was 7:30) and he packed up little Matt and braved the clogged highways and bridges to come and get me.  It took us two and a half hours to get home, and because we took side-streets, we saw damage and trees down everywhere.  100 year old trees were completely out of the ground and some of them landed on homes and cars.  We had one reported fatality, and frankly, I’m surprised there weren’t more.  My friend Anita who lives in Queens snapped these pictures on her cell phone:

I suppose because New York isn’t typically a “severe weather” zone maybe some of us city folk are over-reacting, but my husband who has lived here all his life says he hasn’t seen anything like it.  It was pretty scary.

There were 11 tornado reports yesterday across Ohio and West Virginia, and of course the unconfirmed report of a tornado through NYC.

A new cold front across the Midwest today will bring showers and thunderstorms from the Great Lakes to the Central Plains. Some of these storms could turn severe through the afternoon and evening hours.

The Pacific Northwest remains unsettled this weekend. Some snow is forecast across the higher elevations of the Northern Rockies. The southwest will remain warm and dry.

    And the tropics:

Hurricane Karl is a major Cat 3 storm and it’s about to make a second landfall across Mexico today. It’s been 12 years since we’ve seen 3 simultaneous hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin, so this is a very rare occurrence!  Here’s another amazing picture courtesy of Nasa featuring Karl, Igor and Julia yesterday:

Igor is still a Cat 3 storm as well as it makes a bee-line for Bermuda. Bermuda needs to prepare itself for the potential for serious damage from Igor. They could get over 36 hours of (at least) tropical storm force winds, and several hours of hurricane force winds. Winds of that magnitude for a long period of time could pose a big risk for major damage to the island.  That Island needs to be making their final plans to protect life and property.

Thankfully Julia is barely a hurricane, and no threat to land.  Looking ahead to next week, one of the reliable computer models is hinting at a couple of new waves which could become Lisa and Matthew.  Lets just hope both of them stay away from land if they do decide to form!

Ok everyone.  It’s been quite a week.  I’m going to be very thankful when I’m home with my boys.

Be safe – see you Monday!

Well said, PJ! Spamming and ranting are two things that drive me crazy. I hope it doesn't continue. I like this blog because it is a rant-free zone. There are plenty of other blogs on which to rant, but I like the kinder, gentler blogs. We have a great bunch of folks here! Hey to everyone else out there. I hope everyone has a great week! Margie

I can't understand why Fox can keep continuous coverage on the hurricane in Bermuda and send a correspondent to cover it when there was barely any mention of the hurrican in Mexico. The US State Department says there are over 600,000 Americans living in Mexico. That is 10 times the total population of Bermuda.

Hey folks, I just thought I'd post something so David's rant isn't the first thing you read on the blog. (David, please find another blog on which to rant because we're a kinder, gentler bunch on this blog.) I hope everyone is having a great weekend. I talked to Don earlier. He's in a lot of pain from the surgery when he's awake but he's sleeping a lot because of the pain medicine they're giving him. He was in pretty good spirits, though (probably drug induced!) Have a great evening, all. Margie

Hi guys. We pulled the camper home from the lake today after almost 2 weeks. It's been a great time...just me and hubby. Up before dawn today to watch the bass tourney boats (20-25 of them) leave the landing. That was so cool!! We were sitting there sipping coffee and watching the show. Still hot, hot, hot and very dry here. Sorry you had such a rough time during the storm, JD. Storms like that are scary and no fun. Margie, tell Don "Hello". Glad to hear he's improving. TTFN! Gwen :)

Hey PJ, have fun! Hey to everyone else out there. Don called this morning & said he had surgery yesterday. They found where the leakage was coming from & they put a stent in his kidney. He's very pleased because his creatinine level is lower than it's been since the beginning of this whole ordeal. He's still a little groggy from all the meds. He called his daughter at 6:40 this morning thinking it was 6:40 in the evening but at least he waited until after 9 to call me, thank goodness! Margie

That was one wicked storm in NYC. I'm sorry it was so traumatic for you, Janice. Storms can be scary. We had really heavy rain and thunder and lightning but nothing like NYC. Hey Deb & PJ, I'm glad you two checked in today because I've felt like I've been talking to myself lately & I wasn't going to post anything today. At least there is life out there in blog land! I hope everyone has a great weekend! Margie
