  • Stranded on Long Island because of the "Snow-mess Express!"

    Hi everyone!

Well, I knew it was bad…but not this bad!  I am supposed to work today, but unless I start walking, I’m stuck in Long Island.  No mass transit – no cars/taxis on the roads.  My family from Canada were supposed to leave today, but all of the airports are shut down.   This blizzard goes down as one of the top 5 worst in NYC in terms of snow totals.  Parts of New Jersey measured close to 30 inches!  Central Park saw 13 inches.  When my husband went to clear the driveway last night, he said it was one of the worst storms he’s ever been through.  Hurricane force winds have knocked power out to thousands in the area as well.  The pressure of this storm at its peak was similar to what you would see in a Cat 2 Hurricane!

Our Meteorologist Maria Molina has been working almost non-stop this weekend,  so send her some love and positive energy when you see her on-air.  I’m gong to try and get in there as soon as I can so she can get home and sleep!  She has done a great job covering this storm.

And I see they’re already trying to “name” this blizzard.  We’ve had “snowmageddon”, “snowpocalypse”…someone mentioned “Brrrcast”  but I like the “Snow-mess Express!”  What do you think?  I came up with it last night when I was listening to the 60 mph hour winds blow through my neighborhood.   The storm started in California (bringing extreme rain, snow last week) then travelled across the country messing up the south with Christmas Day snow (some areas hadn’t seen snow on Christmas Day since the 1800s!) and now it’s messing us all up in the Northeast!

Let me know how all of you are doing.  If I wasn’t 8 months pregnant, I probably would’ve started walking into work already!

Hey folks, it's a cold, windy morning here in Cumberland. I hope the winds stops soon! It's 29 with a wind chill around 15--brrr! Hey PJ, your 44 degrees sounds nice. We haven't seen a 40 degree temperature since Dec. 11. Hey Janice, I hope Maria will be able to get some rest now that things are settling down after the storm. I saw her on late last evening so I can imagine she must be tired. She did a great job! I hope everyone has a great day! Margie

Thank you foe being one of the few who realizes you may live in a country, state, county etc.but you live ON an island. Now maybe we can proceed on to all those who use AN before initials as in "an LIRR spokesmans"- written as "an LIRR" but reads as " a Long Island Railroad"

hi, I am in Cork Ireland, we have just had the first major snow fall in decades here, it was barely over 4/5 inches, however the country came to a standstill. I cannot imagine how you are coping.

According to our weather people this is worst storm in 2 decades. I'm looking at about 13" in my yard in Portsmouth, VA. We are at a standstill here today in Hampton Roads or Tidewater as some of uslonger residents call this area, not used to this kind of snow in this area. Made snow cream for the first time in many years last night. May be a couple days before some people can safely leave their neighborhoods.

Mornin' guys! Weather looks bad in the NE. We've got cold here (17 at my house this morning; 34 degrees now), but lovely blue, clear skies. Also no wind today after a couple of really gray, windy days. I tuned in to live stream from Fox 5-NY this morning and have been listening/watching the blizzard coverage. It really looks like a mess! I must say that while I do love a good snow every once in awhile, I don't envy you this blizzard. Well..back to work. Catch y'all later! Gwen :)

It was wild all night. Been a long time since I have heard a snowstorm's wind really "howl" all night long.

WE are driving in from Pittsburgh, and plan to arrive in the city about 7:00 pm and then out to Long Island using the Southern State. What's the odds we make it?

JD, I have been watching the coverage of the Blizzard. What a mess! Be careful and stay safe. We ended up with 3-4 inches. It's in the low 20's right now, but supposed to be 60 by weeks end. Take care. Deb

Hey Janice, please be careful in all that snow! You certainly don't want to hurt yourself or that precious little baby you're carrying. We didn't get much of anything yesterday; it just missed us to the east. It is certainly windy, however. The high wind gust is 33 mph so far. I have to drive back to Cumberland & I have a feeling I'll have a nasty head wind. Hey to everyone else out there! Stay warm & safe wherever you are. Margie

JD, As a born and bred Long Lslander of some 56 years, I need to correct you. You are stranded ON Long Island, not IN Long Island! You can be IN Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau or Suffolk but not LI. Just a friendly poke from one JD to another. Stay safe and warm.
