  • FRIDAY! Woohooo!

    Janice Dean | Meteorologist

    Hi everyone!

Today is my last day, so the next time you see me on Fox, I’ll be a mommy of two!  I can’t quite believe it!  Thanks to everyone for the kind messages and well-wishes.  I will let you know all the details when he makes his debut!  For now, I’m looking forward to a little relaxing with the other men in my life, Matthew and Sean! :)

I’ll also make sure you have some Open Blogs to chat with one another, and keep me up to date on the weather where you are!  LOL!

As for today, most of the country is quiet (sigh of relief)…however, we’re going to see some snowflakes across the Northeast today and tonight as a quick moving system blasts through.  1-2 inches tops.  Tomorrow we’ve got another quick shot of snow with very light accumulations if any.  And yes, we are watching the chance of another big winter storm midweek to hit the Northeast.  It looks like a similar set-up to what we saw this past week…still to early to say for sure, but here’s one of the computer models showing the storm coming out of the Rockies, merging up with plenty of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, and as you can see, affecting MUCH of the U.S!

The Midwest will see a quick round of snow today and tonight, another chance of snow tomorrow and then the bigger system on Monday.

The Northwest will get another dose of rain and mountain snow today and tonight while this more impressive system pushes into the West coast tomorrow, and spread as far south as Central California on Sunday.

I also wanted to post a very cute picture that one of my co-workers, Trish sent me.   It’s her adorable 95 pound Lab Mattie playing in the recent snowfall we’ve had around here.  At least she’s enjoying the weather!!  HA!

    So cute.

Ok, that’s all for now.  Take care, everyone!  And I promise you’ll hear from me again very soon with some wonderful baby news!

  • Snow, anyone?

    Janice Dean | Meteorologist

    Holy Snow, Batman!

The latest “blockbuster” winter storm is now on its way out after record breaking totals across the Northeast.   At one point during the peak of the storm, snow was piling up at a rate of 3 inches an hour.  Many cities broke daily snowfall records, and some saw the most snow ever for the month of January.   Look at these numbers!

This could shape up to be one of the snowiest seasons EVER if we continue to maintain this weather pattern.

For the rest of the country, a weak clipper system will bring parts of the Midwest some light snow (1-3 inches) and eventually will be our next little snow maker for the Northeast (ugh!)

The South is dry with plenty of sunshine, and the West is quiet, however, Santa Ana wind winds will be an issue through the day and warmer temperatures could bring record highs to some southwest cities

The West is quiet today, however, we’re starting to see a Santa Ana wind set up through the day with gusts of up to 50 mph across the mountains.  Warmer than average temperatures could bring record highs to parts of the Southwest!   We are jealous!

Ok, that’s all for now.  One more day to go, and I’m hoping for a few days of relaxation before my family expands a little more!  Hope you’re all safe and sound.

  • Another storm...

    Janice Dean | Meteorologist

    Hey everyone

I have to admit after the winter we’ve already experienced, I’m going to be a little relieved to put my feet up and relax for a few days before this new little bundle arrives!  Many cities have already seen their annual snowfall totals, and after this next storm – perhaps even double those amounts.  We have several weeks left of winter to go:

It’s been hard to get a handle on the exact snowfall totals as there are two “pieces” to this potential blockbuster storm.  One part of the system brought severe weather across the south yesterday with several reports of tornadoes, damage and injuries over Florida.

So as one piece of the storms looms off the coast, a boost of “energy” will come overnight tonight, and that’s when this system will really come together and bring heavy snow to all of the major cities across the I-95 corridor.  Here’s our thinking in terms of snow totals, and the timing:

We have hours of airline delays across the Northeast, and it’s bound to get worse.

Thankfully, the rest of the country is relatively quiet, and hopefully this is the last storm for awhile – although something tells me the “storm train” isn’t done yet!

Be safe everyone!  Pray that this baby doesn’t come tonight!  LOL!

  • UGH!

    Janice Dean | Meteorologist

That’s all I have to say with this next storm system that’s going to bring MORE snow to the Northeast.  It’s groundhog day all over again!  Looks like  a wide swath of 4-8 inches of snow and locally higher amounts depending on where you live.   Keep in mind this is a very tricky storm to follow, and so storm totals could change in the next 12 hours depending on where the low tracks…

Here’s a look at the latest advisories:

And one of the computer models snowfall totals in the next 48 hours.  Keep in mind New England will see more snow as the storm moves north.

We’ve also got the risk for severe weather as this low moves across the Gulf and into the Southeast which means a risk for hail, strong winds and isolated tornadoes:

That’s about all for now.   It’s was Matthew’s second birthday yesterday.  Can’t believe he’s a little boy now.   I was a little concerned that I might miss his birthday since I had some early contractions over the weekend.  That’s pretty scary!  Hopefully I can get through the week without an emergency trip to the hospital!  Friday is my last day before Maternity Leave.  I’m also hoping the baby doesn’t arrive during this next snowstorm – or live on TV for that matter!

  • Another Big Storm for next week?

    Janice Dean | Meteorologist

    Hi everyone!

Here comes the weekend!  Yippeeeee!  It’s going to be ch-ch-ch-chilly for much of the country, and we’re watching another potential blockbuster storm early next week – bringing snow and ice to the south, and yet another big coastal storm for the Northeast.   Ugh.

It was a tough commute in this morning – but the latest storm across the Northeast is on the way out.  We’re still in for additional heavy snow for parts of New England, and lake effect snow continues through the weekend.

We’ve got some big football games happening this Sunday.  Luckily, no major storms for Chicago or Pittsburgh, but for those headed to the games – BUNDLE UP!  :)   Temperatures are dangerously cold over the Plains and the Midwest with windchills below zero:

A little wet for Florida today, otherwise a quiet Friday for the South.  As mentioned, a new system brewing this weekend will bring potentially snow and ice to the South early next week.

It’s more rain and mountain snow for the Northwest, while in the Southwest Santa Ana winds will be fairly calm today, but return over the weekend.  I saw a wind gust yesterday of 74 mph!

Ok, that’s all for now.  I’m off this Monday for Matthew’s second birthday – hopefully back Tuesday to cover the next storm if Matthew’s little brother stays put!

    Have a great weekend everyone!
