  • HAPPY LONG WEEKEND EVERYONE!

    Janice Dean | Meteorologist

    Hi everyone!

Well, a quiet end to an unbelievably busy first week back to work.   I am going to enjoy this weekend with my boys.  I must admit there were a few tears off (and on) camera, but everyone was extremely nice and supportive here.   I will say I’m hugging and kissing Matthew and Teddy (and Sean too) a little more these days.

Thankfully, we are finally seeing this past week’s deadly destructive round of storms exiting the coast today.  We still have a “slight risk” for severe weather across the Eastern Seaboard from Florida to Maine.   Hail, strong winds and isolated tornadoes are possible along with heavy downpours.   Temperatures will remain above average ahead of the cold front associated with this system while behind the boundary, temperatures will be cooler, but drier.

The heat is on across the South with temperatures soaring up to 100 degrees in parts of Texas!  A new storm across the Northern Plains will bring some isolated thunderstorms while the Northwest will be unsettled.  Folks in the southwest will see sunshine but windy conditions.

A look ahead to your Memorial Day forecast:  Much of the country should be fairly quiet.  The Northern tier will see some scattered storms from Wyoming to Nortern Minnesota.  Parts of the High Plains could see some a few isolated thunderstorms.  The southeast should be rain free, but hot and humid.  And unseasonably cool for much of the west, but dry for most.  Here’s a look at the weather map for holiday Monday:

I’m working on Monday, so I’ll check back in to see what you guys are up to.  Thank you again for all your support and kind words this week.  It was tough at times, but it helped reading all of your comments!

And our friend Margie sent us a really great picture of lightning she caught during some storms in her area – take a look:

    Awesome Margie!

    Have a great weekend!!

  • MAJOR TORNADO OUTBREAK FORECAST!

    Janice Dean | Meteorologist

Hi guys…it’s been a busy day in the weather center.  I’m here for all of the Prime Time shows tonight as we could have a major tornado event in the next few hours.    Here’s what the Storm Prediction Center says:

Major Tornado Outbreak Forecast — High Risk Area Expanded…
A major tornado outbreak is forecast later this afternoon into tonight over portions of the mid-Mississippi and lower Ohio Valleys. SPC has expanded the High Risk area for severe thunderstorms to include parts of northeastern Arkansas, western Tennessee, southeastern Missouri, southern Illinois, western and central Kentucky and southern Indiana. Surrounding the High Risk, a Moderate Risk area extends from southern Arkansas and Mississippi to central Indiana and western Ohio. Conditions are favorable for long-track, violent tornadoes in both the Moderate Risk and High Risk areas. The storms will also be capable of producing very large hail, damaging straight-line winds, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and torrential rainfall. Severe thunderstorms and large, damaging tornadoes this afternoon and evening could affect significant population centers including St. Louis, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis.

Here’s a look at that “High Risk” zone (in white)…Moderate Risk is in Red:

Please be careful if you live in any of these areas!

  • HIGH RISK FOR TORNADOES TONIGHT!

    Janice Dean | Meteorologist

    Hi everyone

Another busy day in the Fox Weather Center as we are tracking a MAJOR storm system that could prove deadly if people are not prepared across the Southern and Central Plains.  The storm prediction center has issued a rare HIGH risk zone for long lasting, large very dangerous tornadoes.  Along with tornadoes we could have large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain over neighborhoods that are already saturated.

    Here’s the risk for today:

The “high” risk zone is shaded in white:

And tomorrow morning we’re still not out of the woods:

The dangerous part of this system will arrive at night and overnight, so everyone needs to be on alert listening and watching the weather.  Keep those NOAA weather radios on through the night!

And thanks to all of you for your kind words of support.  As much as its hurts to leave my boys, I’m reminded of what a great work family I have here at Fox, and all of you that visit the blog!

    Talk to you soon!

  • I'm back...

    Janice Dean | Meteorologist

    Hi everyone!

It’s going to take a day or two to get my “footing”.  I have been missing my boys, but the devastating tornado news out of Missouri has taken up much of my day.   Seeing all of the pictures make me thankful that my family is healthy and safe.  My heart aches for all those affected by this latest round of severe weather.   May is typically the busiest month in terms of tornadoes.  Hard to believe considering last month’s historic numbers and the unbelievable loss of life.

Here’s the risk for severe weather tomorrow:

    And yesterday’s incredible storm reports:

Once again, it’s a harsh reminder that life can change in an instant.  I can’t wait to hug my boys when I get home.

One more thing – incase you missed it – Jon and Jenna gave me such a warm welcome back today on Happening Now.  Here’s the link to take a peak:

I kept it together as best as I could!

Thanks for all your well-wishes of support.  I definitely needed it.  It was harder today than it was when I went back after Matthew was born.

    Hug the ones you love!
