  • Funniest Reporter in NYC is...ME?

So last Sunday night I did something I never thought I’d be able to do…

A few weeks ago I was asked if I would be interested in competing in this year’s 8th annual New York Funniest Reporter contest to help raise money for the Humane Society, and after consulting with my husband (who had more faith in my abilities that I did), I agreed to try.

Stand-up is something I’ve never really thought about doing.  I love to watch it, and am fascinated with people who can go up on stage to make people laugh with nothing more than their voices and body language, so, when faced with this new challenge, I decided to just go for it.

I bought a notebook and started writing things down that I found funny.  I read a few books and watched a lot of YouTube videos with well-known comedians performing their craft.   Thankfully, I was also paired up with a professional comic named Jonathan Morvay, who looked at my notes, and offered wonderful suggestions to help me come up with a routine that fit my personality and what I do on a day-to-day basis – being a working mom, a wife and doing the weather!

(Me and Jonathan Morvay, my comedy mentor!)

Most of my act dealt with being on television and being a meteorologist.  Over the years there have been many moments that I’ve told people about in conversation that I brought to the stage with me…like funny emails and messages from viewers.   I also talked about weird places that I’ve been asked about a forecast…like in the restroom and the doctor’s office!

Magee Hickey was the other reporter that tied for first place with me.  And she was incredible.   Her act focused in on her life as a reporter, being a working mom, and how it’s also a challenge to keep things “fresh” while trying to maintain a career in television.

I should also point out that my friend and collegue Charles Payne from FBN  placed third, and was AMAZING!  He had the hardest task of performing first, and was such a natural performer.

Doing Stand Up made me realize how important it is to challenge ourselves in different ways throughout our lives and careers.  Working on a comedy routine really exercised a part of my brain that had been dormant over the last few years.  And now that I have it back, I don’t want to let it go!

In these few short weeks, I feel a little more confident in myself – and not just because I won a contest – but because I felt good at something I had never tried before!  My husband even says he’s seen a bit of a difference in me!   There’s a little more “spring” in my step or maybe a little extra sparkle in my eyes.

It took me out of my comfort zone, and made me realize we all need to try something different from time to time.  Even if it’s taking a class after work or joining a club, volunteering or learning a new language-we all have to keep challenging ourselves in small ways to keep things fun and interesting!

One other thing that made this experience even more special is the support I received from my second family here at Fox.  I had such a big cheering section in the crowd, so it was hard not to have a little extra confidence with my friends rooting for me!

Special thanks to Ryan McCormick and Mark Goldman for inviting me to the event, and to Comic Strip Live for hosting it.  Some of the world’s most famous comedians graced the same stage I did on Sunday night, and it felt wonderful to be close to such entertainment history.    One of the greatest New York moments I will never forget, and will forever cherish.

If she can make it there…she can make it anywhere!

…And don’t forget to tip your waitress!

Congratulations, Janice! We all knew you are a funny gal! I hope there is a video out there somewhere of your performance. Hey to all the other bloggers out there. It looks like I took my vacation a week too early. Last week was the hottest week of the summer so far but the past two days we've had lows in the mid to upper 50's with highs in the low 80's. What beautiful weather! I hope everyone has a great Friday! Take care, all. Margie

Told ya you'd win. Hardest thing is making it look effortless, which comes with practice. Try out your stuff on Red Eye(shameless begging), where you won't be judged, except by Andy Levy.

The old saying "The cream always raises to the top" certainly fits here JD. Congratulations! Kind of overcast, muggy, and 63 today. The WA coast seems to be stuck in a rut. That's OK since we are painting the house and don't need rain or hot weather. Take care all. Sam
