  • Historic cold settles in...

    Hello everyone!

The big story is obviously the INCREDIBLE cold today. Temperatures are 30-50 degrees below average from the Plains to the Upper Mississippi Valley.

Daytime highs will range from -20 along the Canadian Border and Minnesota to the teens in the Midwest and Ohio Valley.   Gusty winds will bring winds to -60 or even lower at times!

Look at all these windchill advisories (as far south as the Gulf of Mexico!)

Heavy snow is also piling up  from the Lower Missouri Valley to the Great Lakes.   6-12 inches is possible for cities like Chicago, St Louis, Louisville, Indianapolis, Detroit and Cleveland.   Even Memphis could see a slushy inch or two!

And freezing rain will be a major concern from the Mid-Atlantic to Northern New England through the day.  We had JFK airport closed earlier with a plane skidding on the runway!   There will be delays and cancellations at many major airports today and tomorrow.

As the cold air moves into the Northeast on Monday, any moisture left on the ground will freeze solid making for a very dangerous commute.

And the good news?  By Tuesday, temperatures should start to rebound for much of the country with no major storms on the horizon!  Woohoo!

And can you believe this week is my (official) 10 year anniversary with Fox?  It’s the longest job I’ve ever had, and by far the best one.  I feel so blessed to have such a happy life with a wonderful family and a great place to work.  Here’s to a fantastic 2014 everyone.  Thanks to all of you for coming back again and again to read and comment on the blog!  I am so appreciative of your time and kindness over the years.

Audrey from Indiana

You do an excellent job with the Fox crew, and I hope you enjoy many more years with them telling us all about the weather, and also sharing stories with our blogger friends about you, your husband, and two darling little boys. Blessings on you. May you enjoy the new year to its fullest. Stay warm everyone! From the Chicago area. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Audrey

Hey, JD, I really enjoy your reporting but yesterday, Monday, on one of your clips you showed a guy out sweeping the snow off his car and you comment was, "He shouldn't be out there, he should be in the house!" Possibly that was just a tongue in cheek but you should know that we can't all stay in the house no matter what the temps. We have cattle, horses, chickens and other animals that depend on us to feed, water and bed them. You just have to dress for it!

In the '70s we were afraid of global cooling.. Now, global warming. Tough sell when the upper mid-west had double digit below zero actual and wind chill temps. The people who scream the loudest stand to get hurt in their pocket books if it turns out that their war cries of global warming are and continue to be false. They are only interested in making a profit from the rest of us and really do not care a whit about whatever the status of the world might actually be.

Brrr! What is going on? Been awhile since we've had temps this low. Our high was 18 today. That is RARE in MS! By Saturday, it'll be back to upper 60s. BTW, congrats on the 10 years, JD. I've been enjoying you this last week while Rick has been on vacation. Must say your fashion sense in hatwear is excellent! Hope all stay warm for the next few days. At least we don't have snow or ice to worry about. Y'all take care! Gwen :)

Hey Dan! I should have mentioned that the deer just bounced off my car and kept on running! It's probably walking with a limp but it never fell to the ground, as far as I could tell. Hey everyone else, I just want to update our weather--brrrrrrr! It's 6 degrees with a wind chills in the negative teens. I won't complain though. It's -5 with wind chills around -27 in Frostburg. That's crazy! Stay warm everyone!

Happy 10 year anniversary with Fox, JD! Wishing you many, many more (for our sake!) Margie, sounds like you had an awful first day back on the job! Glad that you weren't injured in the "run-in" with the deer, but sorry to hear about the damage to your car. Deer are a huge problem here in No Cal as well. Your post didn't mention how the deer fared, but I love venison and can provide you recipes! Sam, be careful up on the roof! All the best to all the regular bloggers and stay warm and safe! Dan

Hey to all the regular bloggers out there. I've had a crazy day today. It was the 1st day back to work for the college after the Christmas break. Got to work & found not one, but two, separate floods in the library. Then I went out to run a couple errands & a dopey deer ran into the side of my car. I could have ignored the dent in the fender but its hoof or leg damaged the bottom of the fender & the door rubs on it. When I got home I found the memory bear that the Lutheran Home hospice volunteer made for me out of one of my mom’s favorite shirts. It was out in the cold all afternoon so I had to wait for it to warm up before I could hug it. The same volunteer who made the memory bear for my mom out of one of my dad’s shirts also made this one. She did a great job. Stay safe & warm, all! Margie

31 and overcast in Aberdeen. We're in the middle of putting all our Christmas decorations away for another year. Margie, I need to go up on the roof and clean up that safety rail I put on the chimney. Santa left part of his red suit hung up on it. Mrs. Claus will have a fit! Take care, be safe. Sam

Didn't Europe experience an unusual deep freeze last winter? How does our Polar Express compare to Europe last winter?

Janice, Congrats on 10 years, can not believe it has been that long since I saw your dance moves!! I have been unemployed (steady job) since 2007 so am trying to make my own way, sometimes it works but 20013 was not good. If you have a FT benefit-paying job you are indeed blessed. If you have a job you like its not really a job. Hanging in there.

9 am, 1/6/14 Springfield, IL. -13 with WC -33. Got 8 residences done yesterday, it was brutal. Snowed 6 to 8 inches here but wind made 2 foot drifts in spots. Did I say it was brutal?

Hey Janice, congratulations on your 10 year anniversary with Fox! You do a great job and they are very blessed to have you there! And I feel blessed being a part of your blogging family. Thanks for doing a great job with covering this crazy weather. I'm not looking forward to temperatures in the negative numbers but at least it's nowhere near as bad as Minnesota! Hey to everyone else out there. Stay safe and warm wherever you are! Margie
