  • Extreme drought for the West, another arctic blast midweek!

    Hello everyone!

How is your weekend so far?   My school visit last week was amazing.  I read Freddy the Frogcaster to about 200 kids!  I think they really enjoyed it.  I’ll post some pictures when I receive them from the organizers.  The kids were so enthousiastic about the weather, and many of them knew a lot more a lot than I expected.  There may have been several budding young meteorologists in the crowd.   And  I don’t know if I mentioned this to you yet,  but I just finished a sequel to Freddy!  The new book will be out in the fall.  It’s a new exciting “chapter” in my life I’m thrilled to explore!

And speaking of weather,  we have another busy week ahead of us for both East and West coasts.

Several clipper systems (fast moving storm that originate from Canada) will bring light to moderate snow across the Midwest, Great Lakes and Northeast.  Generally 1-3 inches will fall with some locations seeing 3-5.  Windy conditions will bring possible white out conditions and cold windchills.

And while we’re on the topic of c-c-c-cold,  another chunk of Arctic air will plunge southward Monday/Tuesday bringing single digits and teens for highs for the Midwest/Ohio Valley/Great Lakes.

It will not be as cold as a couple of weeks ago, but certainly windchills will be dangerous:

And a  large, powerful area of high pressure continues to dominate the West coast into next week.

Temperatures will remain above average especially across California with record highs possible again this weekend into next week.

With the warm air, low humidity and breezy conditions, wildfire danger is extremely high.

California is into a historic drought this year, and that’s not helping matters.  It doesn’t look like moisture will move into this starved region for the next several weeks!

So that’s what we’re working on today.  Hope you’re all doing great, and staying safe!

Hi all: I don't know how to describe it, but the snow falling today is simply BEAUTIFUL. We are experiencing lake effect snow coming off of Lake Michigan, and we usually can bypass this episode, but we are right in the middle of it this time. It's been falling for about 10 hours, and I believe we have hit the foot mark of depth. Glad we are staying in today and enjoying it from the inside out. We have great neighbors who "dig us out." Hope all of you are safe and well on this day. Audrey

A beautiful day here today. In the mid 70's, sunny. Had the top down all day while running errands. Supposed to turn cold tomorrow and may get nasty by the end of the week, so I am glad I got out today. Should be a good Super Bowl in 2 weeks. The highest seeded teams in AFC and NFC. Usually when you see a behavior like Sherman's, there is a coach who normally does nothing to discourage it. Such a shame since the qb, Russell Wilson is such a class act and talented leader. Hope all are well, JB

Hey Sam, I'm posting this comment on the main thread to cover up the stupid spammer. Last night Tony Dungy tweeted that Sherman was "classless." I think that was a very good description. I hate that kind of behavior, even when it's a player on my favorite team. I hate to root against your team but I hope the Broncos roll right over Sherman. He deserves it! There are too many overpaid, spoiled brats in the NFL. Margie

I was rooting for the Seahawks in their game but after watching that moron Sherman, I think I'm going to root for the Broncos in the Super Bowl. Sorry Sam! Those guys get paid millions of dollars to make plays like that. They should act like they've done it before! What a moron! Should be a good Super Bowl! Margie

The weather isn't too bad this morning. We may get some showers later but the Seahawks should be able to beat the 49ers under partly cloudy skies. We have 2 stadiums side by side in Seattle. A big tailgate party is held in the baseball stadium then people leave there to go watch the football. My sister is part of the crew that monitors the tailgaters. In any event, may the best team s win!! Sam
