  • Some heartwarming news for a cold winter's day...

    Hi everyone!

I’m off for the rest of this week and hunkered down with the kids this morning.  We’ve got about 6 inches of snow on the ground already, and now sleet is falling.  This has been some winter.  If there’s some good news on the horizon, it appears that for the second half of February, temperatures are going to rebound and give us some pretty (relatively) warm days for much of the country.

I wanted to post a picture and letter Mary Harper sent me.  She is the sweet lady who began Operation Shoe Box which is a non profit organization that sends care packages to soldiers around the world.  In November, I went to The Villages in Florida to be their honorary one millionth care package packer, and Mary told me she would send me a picture of the troops that received the items.   I was so happy to get this email the other day, and wonderful photo:

    Hi Janice!

I wanted to send you a pic of the Marines and the young man that got the millionth care package! His name is LCPL Seth Hall and he is with the 1st Battalion 9th Marines in Afghanistan and he originally from Boston MA. He is 19 yrs old and it is his first deployment. I copied you on what he wrote to us below:
    Dear Mary,
We just got your package and I can not tell you how thankful we are. We had a not so merry Christmas of 20 hrs of post and patrols. Your package brought Christmas cheer for sure. We are so grateful for what you and everyone at Operation Shoebox has done for us. From the motley misfits of truck 3-1 CAAT plt Wpns Co we thank you.
Isn’t that amazing?  I have to tell you, I received this email on a day when I was so fed up with the snow and cold.  It was a gentle reminder that these men and women are sacrificing everything to protect our freedom and keep us safe.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone.  Be safe, and tell those you love how much they mean to you!  (HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!)

Hi all, dreary day, some rain, some overcast. It was 49 this AM but cooled off to 46, heading to a low of 43. I'm amazed! I did my daughter's income taxes for her at the same time as mine on Monday. Filed online and she already got her refund. I won't get one, I owed. Maybe the IRS ran out of conservatives to investigate and are working on tax returns this week instead. Have a good one, be safe. I just got an email from a friend in Valley City, ND. Temperature is 0, not too much snow but some wind. He said they got gusts up to 56mph last night. Doesn't seem to bother him much. George, in Jan. 1979 I was working a labor dispute in Port Angeles at the Rayonier pulp mill. A cold snap hit and about half the water lines in the mill froze. Then things started breaking down. Four 16 to 18 hour days later the thaws came. More mess!! Be safe, Sam

I always loved winters when I lived in Chicago, which was most of my life. I really miss them. I know Midwesterners and Easterners would take my Southern California living any time. I remember the many times I had trouble getting to and from work on brutal winter days. And on one day in the Blizzard of '79 (Jan. 1979), I had to walk about three miles in the deep snow when traffic came to a complete standstill. As the old song goes, "Those were they days my friend, we thought they'd never end!"

Janice, I'm glad you found out who got that millionth shoe box. It makes it even more special when you know who the recipient is. Hey to everyone else out there. I am so ready for spring. We've already gotten over a foot of snow & it's still coming down. Yuck! Have a feeling the college will be closed again tomorrow. That's fine with me! I certainly don't feel like going anywhere in this weather! Stay safe & warm everyone! Margie

Hello all. I'll leave it to Janice to opine about the weather back East. Suffice it to say here it is stuck on 48 degrees. The overcast left and was replaced by sunshine and blue skies. Janice's picture above reminded of when we helped our kids and their kids put boxes together every year. Seems like there was always just enough room in the box to get "one more little thing" in. Stay safe, stay warm. Joni, throw another log on the fire. Sam
