  • Memorial Day

    Hi everyone.

Sorry for the delay.  I was in Canada with the family visiting Grandma.  Matthew lost his second tooth while we were there, and the Canadian Tooth Fairy left a strange looking five dollar bill under the pillow!  HA!

Thought you would all find the picture a little funny!  :)

Enjoy the rest of your long weekend.   A special Thanks to all our men and women who serve and honor our country, protect our freedom, and to their families who love and support them.

I remember Decoration Day (now called Memorial Day) in 1946 -- the day "When Johnny Came Marching Home." The annual parade down Oak Park Avenue in my hometown of Berwyn, Illinois was unusually long that year because so many World War Two vets had finally come home. Several of the marching bands played Glenn Miller's "American Patrol" and "The St. Louis Blues March." Little kids, like myself (I was only five years old"), waived our tiny American flags. Those were the days, my friend....

JB in Texas

May all have a safe Memorial Day and take a little time to appreciate all those who have given their life to allow us our liberties. I pray for the safety of all those currently in the service. A lot of steady rain today and more all week according to forecasts. I guess we are getting it now, because soon summer will be here and rain will be more rare than honesty at a D.C. press conference! Later, JB

Boy, where did all the grumpy people come from? Thanks for your comment, Gwen. It's spot on. We do remember all those who have sacrificed their lives for our country. Since we cannot thank them personally, we can think about those that are left behind. We can also thank those currently serving since they know the dangers they face every day. They even protect those nasty people out there. Janice isn't a dummy but I know who is. I wish all the regular bloggers a great day. Margie

Memorial Day is NOT Happy...

It is so very sad to know that so many people don't know the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. Memorial Day is all about those who paid the ultimate price while defending our country. What is "Happy" about that? Veteran's Day is the time to honor all living members of the armed forces who have served their country.

I, too, think that we should be mindful in wishing others a "happy" Memorial Day; but JD is certainly a lady with a great heart and meant only good with that title. I'll give her a pass on this one. Personally, I like Lt. Col. Allen West's suggestion that instead we say "Honor Memorial Day". At any rate, we should all take time from our holiday activities to remember those who died for each freedom we enjoy. Also, let's remember the loved ones who were left behind to grieve.

A veteran

You should rethink the saying - "Happy" Memorial Day.
