  • Hurricanes and Earthquakes

    Hi everyone

It’s a busy Sunday.  The lead story is the magnitude 6.0 earthquake in California Southwest of Napa:

Extensive damage is being reported, and there’s a risk of aftershocks in the next few days.

In terms of magnitude, here are the catagories, and keep in mind the difference between a 6.0 earthquake and a 6.9 is 9 TIMES greater, so even though the damage is extensive, it could’ve been much, much worse in terms of strength:

    Here’s a look at the World’s Top 10 Earthquakes:

    And the largest in California:

In other news, we are watching two tropical systems.  Cristobal was named this morning and all of the reliable computer models keep this storm off-shore:

Of course we’ll have the risk of strong waves, rip currents and dangerous surf through the week…

And there’s Hurricane Marie in the Pacific at Cat 4 strength!

The good news here is that Marie will continue to move away from the coast as well:

And the heat is on over the Mississippi Valley where we have heat advisories up and heat indices are making it feel well over 100 degrees:

A slight risk of severe weather exists this afternoon and evening over the Northern plains and Midwest:

And would you believe we could see snow over the highest elevations of the Northern Rockies?

Yup.  It’s a busy Sunday.  Stay safe everyone!

Hi all: It's been a while, but with the busy days of summer, one does not take too much time on the computer. Hope all is well that live in the area of the recent earthquake. And for the other storms that are brewing, may everyone stay safe and sound. We are having "hot" days here in Indiana. Makes us feel like we are in Florida. J.D., your coverage of all these storms is amazing. You do such a nice job. Good day to all. Audrey

Sonoma Dan

Many thanks for your notes, A.J. and wasam! Haven't felt any aftershocks, which initially was a huge concern, but then read on the Internet that the aftershocks were very small and not felt outside of Napa. I'm the next valley over to the West in Sonoma. I never got back to sleep after the 3:20 a.m. quake this morning, so I'm beat and going to bed very early this evening. A good night to all and thanks again to my blog family for your concern! Dan
