Paloma is now a dangerous Major Cat 3 Hurricane that will brush very close to Grand Cayman tonight and then into Cuba tomorrow.  A very scary night for all those in its path…

Hurricane Paloma

Just in - Paloma is now a Hurricane.  75 mph winds…moving to the north at 12 mph.  Hurricane warnings are now up for the Cayman Islands.  My good friend Tash lives on Grand Cayman Island, so I’ve asked her to keep us up to date on her preparations for this late season hurricane which could intensify to a Cat 2 - possibly even a Cat 3 before crossing over Cuba.

Blizzard, severe weather, and the tropics!

Hi everyone!

A busy day in weatherland - with a pretty potent winter storm cranking across the Northern Plains.  Snow totals of over 30 inches have been reported across the Black Hills with much of the Dakotas under blizzard warnings where travel is next to impossible in a lot of areas.  On the warm side of this storm, we could see the potential for heavy rain, thunderstorms and a chance of severe weather from parts of the Midwest and across the Mississippi River Valley - especially along the Arklatex.    Here’s a peak at all of the watches and warnings underway:

http://www.weather.gov/

The Pacific Northwest is also seeing more wet weather as another system invades that region.  Heavy rain, wind and mountain snow will continue today and tomorrow.  Further south, the dry conditions and return of light to moderate Santa Ana winds will enhance the fire danger over Southern California through Friday.

As for Paloma,  this tropical storm is expected to become a Hurricane in the next few days as it drifts to the north and east threatening the Cayman Island and Cuba.    Here’s the track and computer models courtesy of www.wunderground.com.

TD 17…Soon to be Paloma

Well, we have our 17th Tropical Depression out there east of Central America.  Looks like this could become a hurricane in the next few days and cross over Cuba.  Here’s the Cone from the NHC, and I’ll have more details tomorrow:

Night all!

Weather starts to heat up!

Good morning everyone!

Well, it’s finally over.  I think no matter who you voted for, it’s kind of weird waking up with the election being over…however, it is certainly going to be an interesting year ahead in politics.  I was moved by both candidates speeches last night, and obviously there were historical leaps and bounds made across this Country with our new President Elect.    As someone who was born and raised in Canada, I find it extremely interesting following the U.S. way of governance, and in a lot of ways I think it’s a better system than the Parliamentary one.  This truly is a wonderful Country, and I feel very blessed to live and work here.

So, moving on…we do have some weather to discuss!  That storm that was in the West yesterday is now pushing into the Central U.S where some changes are in store!  Cold air behind this system has prompted winter weather advisories over the Rockies, and blizzard watches and warning over the Dakotas.  The central and southern plains will run the risk of severe weather including heavy rain, wind, hail and isolated tornadoes.  Here’s a peak at all of the watches and warnings that are up already this morning: http://www.weather.gov/

Meanwhile, the coastal storm off the eastern seaboard will bring rain, wind and rough seas from the Midatlantic up to the Northeast, and the Northwest will deal with another system moving into that region with rain, wind and mountain snow.   High pressure building across the Great Basin is going to bring back those offshore winds to Southern California tomorrow and Friday.

And believe it or not, we are still watching the tropics.  Just east of Central America, and area of “disturbed weather” could become a tropical depression at any time.  A hurricane hunter aircraft should be investigating this system later on today to see if this could be Paloma!

I know a few of you sent some pics in, so I will post those today at some point!  Have a great day everyone!

Countdown til the Polls Close!

Hi everyone!  Are you excited about tonight?  What on earth are we going to talk about after this election is done?  Did you have an easy time voting tonight?  Was the weather co-operative?  Are you watching FOX?  What do you think of our fancy new studios?  I have to tell you, I did a tour the other day of the UNBELIEVABLE new sets on the 12th floor in our building, and it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before!  Bill Hemmer gave me a peak at his fancy  “Bill Board” and you cannot believe how cool this new technology is!  I am so excited to watch my coworkers rock the election tonight.   This studio is like a giant spaceship!  There are so many bells and whistles I felt like I was venturing into a new galaxy!  Look at how tiny Megyn Kelly looks standing next to that HUGE Movie Screen called the “Launch Pad!” for her exit polling data.  I’m dreaming of giant weather maps on that thing! haha!

I highly recommend checking out our live coverage tonight in the ”Strategy Room” (you can find that here) -with it’s fun, uninterrupted coverage of the election without the commercials, and the anchors and commentators can really “let their hair down!” :)

And my buddy Shepard Smith will be heading up the coverage on our local Fox Broadcast Stations.

If you see Bret Baier in the “Balance of Power” room - I’ll let you in on a secret - he’s in in my weather studio against the green screen with a “virtual reality set!!”  It’s VERY cool!  (And now I  want my OWN virtual reality set! :) HA!

I must give a shout out to all the other Bloggers who will be working hard tonight giving you the latest at the poll numbers and information live and “on the scene!”   including Laura Ingle with scoop on the Election Party fun!

I will be up watching the polls close as late as I can (I’ve been up since 3am, so this might be a little tough til the bitter end) but just wanted to check in and give props to my co-workers who make me so proud when I watch them do such amazing work on this momentous night!  How great are Carl Cameron and Major Garrett?  They are truly the best in the business, and have made watching this coverage so fun to watch, and easier to undertand.  And speaking of the best and the brightest,  I have to admit, I am getting a little sad watching Brit Hume anchor his last official election tonight.   I can’t imagine watching Special Report without his calm, cool delivery every night.   There’s nobody better than Brit Hume.

Ok. Time to watch the results!  Oh yes, one more thing — In weatherland, I forgot to mention this today, but we might have the “P” storm in the tropics later this week!  I must admit, I haven’t been keeping a close eye on the tropics, but when my friend Liz asked me what the weather would be like for her cruise in the Caribbean this weekend,  I had a peak and noticed a big “blob” just east of Central America!  It could slowly develop into something tropical this week!  If it does become a storm, the name will be Paloma! (Had to sneak in a little weather news here) The season hasn’t ended yet!

Thanks for checking in everyone!  And for keeping this blog friendly and fun to take part in!  Happy Election watching!

What’s your polling weather?

Good morning everyone!  Well, the day we’ve all been waiting for is finally here…Can you believe it?  Amazing!  Hopefully the weather won’t cause problems getting to the polls, however, we do have two storms that could cause some annoying travel heading out to vote.  One is in the west bringing widespread rain, wind and snow from Washington State down into Northern California and then in across the Rockies.    Some areas could see up to a foot of snow in the higher elevations.  You can check out all of the winter weather advisories here:

http://www.weather.gov/

us1

And the other area we’re watching is the southeast coast where a low pressure system off-shore will bring unsettled weather to the eastern Carolinas up to Virginia and eventually towards Baltimore and D.C this afternoon.  Steady rain and wind will make for a miserable day for some folks unfortunately, although the bulk of the storm should stay offshore.

As far as temperatures go, it’s warmer than average for most - all the cold air remains bottled up in Canada.

For our friend David in Alaska, temperatures are pretty cool (10 degrees in Fairbanks with light snow) Anchorage is forecasting a high in the low 20s with some scattered snow showers.  For our friends in Hawaii, temperatures should be fine - we could see some rain on the Big Island.

Let us know what kind of weather you’re waking up to, and how the lines were at the polls!

I’ll keep checking in throughout the day!

Happy voting everyone! :)

It was Chilly in Philly…for Game 5!

Good morning!

A pretty quiet morning in the weather machine rant department, although I think I stirred up some good comments with my pregnant lady stand-up routine in the subway!  haha.  Riding it last night, no one got up for me to sit down, so I just smiled to myself and realized this is the reality we live in - like it or not.  I thought Guillaume brought up some interesting comments about New York subways being a very bizarre world where it’s everyone for themselves - you’re on your own during rush hour in this town.   And you really do see the worst in people when it’s rush hour getting to and from work in New York.   I went to dinner with my sister-in-law last night, and brought up my discoveries on  subway etiquette.  She smiled and said “Yup- it’s been that way for decades…even 20 years ago” (when she had her daughter, my niece Danielle)  Sigh….

Moving on to more optimistic news!  Weather is pretty good today for much of the country.  The storm that wrecked havoc on the Northeast is now history, and the temperatures will warm up over the next few days here.  Thankfully Game 5 of the World series got played, and the Philies were victorious.   Maybe the chilly nighttime temperatures helped team as the mercury dropped to the 30s overnight… There were certainly lots of blankets and parkas in the stands.  So congrats to all the fans in Philadelphia who have been waiting 28 years for a championship!

We’ve got another potential freeze tonight across the Southeast tonight.  Florida has broken some pretty serious records over the last few evenings with some wicked overnight lows!  Freeze advisories remain up tonight.

The rest of the country remains pretty uneventful in terms of storms, although the West is going to get pounded with a line up of systems over the next few days ushering in cooler air, rain, wind and higher elevation snow.

I’ll post an Open Blog later on, and take a peak to see if we’ve got some fun pictures to show off!

Talk to you soon!
